Why a player can be registered when the window is shut
The Italian window closed on 1 September 2026. From that moment a Serie A club can no longer complete transfers with other clubs: no signings, no loans, nothing incoming. One exception remains, and it is not an Italian loophole: it is written into FIFA’s Regulations on the Status and Transfer of Players, whose article 6 establishes that a professional whose contract has expired prior to the end of a registration period may be registered outside that period.
The reason for the rule concerns the worker before the club: a player without a contract is not being held by anyone, and no club is owed compensation for him. Stopping him from signing for four months would leave him unemployed for a reason that is not of his making.
