An obligation and an option are not two shades of the same thing
With an option to buy, the decision stays with the borrowing club right up to the deadline: if the player has not convinced by June, the option is not taken up and he returns to his parent club. With an obligation, the decision was taken on the day the papers were signed, and the only thing left is the passing of time.
For Manchester City the difference is between a forward who might come back and a forward who has already gone. It changes squad planning, because no slot has to be held open for a possible return, and it changes the accounting, because the sale is no longer a probability to be weighed but a date to be waited for. For Tottenham it means having bought a player twelve months before paying for him.
The numbers are not in the statement
The official Tottenham text contains not a single figure: no loan fee, no permanent fee, no length for the contract the player will sign once the move is completed. Everything circulating on the money side is press reconstruction. The BBC, on 27 August, puts the obligation at 60 million pounds next summer: that is a report, not a published clause.
The same caution applies to the back story. The BBC also puts at 59 million pounds the sum City paid Eintracht Frankfurt in January 2025, while public transfer databases log that same deal at 75 million euros: two numbers in a similar range, not convertible into one another at the exchange rate, to be attributed rather than merged into a single figure. On the English side, the BBC calculates Tottenham’s summer outlay at more than 312 million pounds as of the day of the announcement, while the encyclopaedic count for the season has moved more than once with the window still open: 322 million from 27 to 31 August, 304.5 after the revision of 31 August. Here too the perimeter changes with the source, and with the day on which it is read. Marmoush is the second player Spurs have taken from City in three days, after Sávio was confirmed on 25 August.
What the exit is worth in City’s books, and on how many assumptions
A profit on player sales is the difference between the sale price and the residual book value of the registration, which is the original cost minus the amortisation already charged. It is not booked when the loan is signed: it is booked when the permanent transfer is completed, so next summer. English clubs close their financial year on 30 June, and the exact date set in the contract is not public: which is why the honest phrasing is next summer, not a given month.
An order of magnitude can still be built, as long as it is presented for what it is. Starting from the 59 million pounds of January 2025 and a City contract running to 30 June 2029, the amortisation is spread over roughly four and a half years, around 13 million a year. By mid 2027 two and a half years would have passed, leaving a residual value near 26 million. The permanent fee, though, is not a single figure: Sky Sports write that the 60 million pounds are 50 guaranteed plus 10 in bonuses. On the guaranteed part alone the gross accounting profit would be around 24 million, and it would rise to around 34 million only if the bonuses were earned in full. Three caveats, and all of them matter: both the entry price and the exit price come from newspapers and not from accounts, the calculation ignores commissions and any loan fee, and it assumes straight-line amortisation. This is our estimate, not a Manchester City figure.
The crack in the story: an obligation, but possibly conditional
Here is the one flaw in the word the whole piece rests on. The Tottenham statement names no condition at all, while the Transfermarkt database classifies the deal as a conditional obligation to buy. No accessible source says what those conditions would be: in deals of this kind they are usually staying up, a minimum number of appearances, or European qualification. The difference is real and worth stating: on City’s side a conditional obligation counts as a near certainty in the accounts, not as a signature already filed. What Manchester City write has to be added, because they do not use the same words. The club’s note of 27 August, headlined “Marmoush joins Spurs on loan”, describes the deal only as “a season-long loan” and closes by wishing the player well for his “loan switch to Spurs”: it does not contain the word obligation, it does not mention next summer’s permanent transfer and it carries no fee. The two statements tell the same deal with two different perimeters, and the difference is exactly the one this piece is describing: the buying club puts the obligation in writing, the selling club writes only the loan.
Why City are letting a 16-goal forward leave
Tottenham themselves put the numbers in writing: 62 appearances and 16 goals in all competitions for City since January 2025, with a Carabao Cup and an FA Cup won last season. The figure that explains the departure comes from the BBC: in 2025/26 the Egyptian began 13 of his 21 Premier League appearances on the bench, with Erling Haaland as the first-choice centre forward. What to watch now
Two things, and neither concerns whether the transfer is done, because it is. The first is whether a fee is ever declared by either club: until that happens, the 60 million pounds remain a newspaper number, and every calculation about the profit on the sale falls with it.
The second is minutes, which is precisely why Marmoush left Manchester. An obligation to buy guarantees the player a club in June, not a starting shirt in September: if he ends up in London inside the same pecking order he has just left, Tottenham will be paying next summer for a signing they never got to assess.
