On 30 August 2026 AC Milan announced that they had sold Rafael Leão to Galatasaray on a permanent deal, after seven seasons and 291 appearances in the Rossoneri shirt. The deal is worth 38 million euros as a fixed fee plus 20 per cent of the profit on the next sale, but those figures are not in the Italian statement: they were written by the Turkish club, which, being listed on the stock exchange, is required to declare them. And it is the same obligation that, the day before, produced the document half the internet mistook for the announcement of the transfer.

29 August was not a transfer announcement
Galatasaray Sportif A.Ş. is listed on the Istanbul stock exchange, so every fact capable of moving the share price ends up on the public disclosure platform. From there comes an obligation that does not exist in Serie A: the club has to communicate the opening of a negotiation as well, not only its conclusion. The result is three documents in twenty four hours, all on the official site, all with the air of an announcement, and profoundly different from one another.
The first is from 29 August, 13:41 local time. Two sentences in all: it says that official negotiations have begun with the player and with his club, in the Turkish formula resmi görüşmelere başlanmıştır. It contains no figure, no duration, not the word agreement. On the evening of the same day, when Leão lands in Istanbul at 18:39 on a private flight at Atatürk airport and is greeted by the fans, the club, in reporting it, still describes him as “the player whose start of negotiations we announced”. Not one of their players.
That the distinction is not a quibble is shown by a verifiable detail. The English encyclopaedia entry on Milan’s 2026-2027 season dates the transfer to 29 August and cites as its only sources precisely the announcement of the opening of negotiations and the news of the arrival in Istanbul: neither of the two announces a transfer. Public transfer archives also record 29/08/2026. A wrong date was already circulating, backed by two authoritative pages, while the document that closes the deal had not yet been written.
30 August: first the terms, then the signature, then the medical
The second document is from 30 August, 13:02 Istanbul time, which is 12:02 in Italy. Here the agreement with AC Milan S.p.A. is there, and with it the terms: 38 million euros as a fixed transfer fee, 20 per cent of the profit made on the player’s next sale in Milan’s favour, a four year contract valid from the 2026-2027 season and ten million euros net guaranteed for each season.
One clarification that is almost always lost in translation into Italian: the Turkish text speaks of 20 per cent of the kâr, that is of the profit, and not of 20 per cent of the sale price. The two formulas produce very different numbers, and the second circulates more than the first.
Then the rest arrives within thirty six minutes, in Istanbul time: at 13:14 the welcome statement, at 13:38 the words spoken after the official signature, at 13:50 the news of the medical at the Acıbadem clinic, the club’s sponsor hospital. The order is reversed compared with the Italian habit: the medical does not come before the announcement, it is the last thing communicated, after the agreement and after the signature. President Dursun Özbek closes the matter with a formula that is worth more than a figure, “Şu anda Galatasaray’ın futbolcusu kendisi”: at this moment he is a Galatasaray player. He adds that the club had been working on the deal since June and that he expects an important contribution above all in the Champions League.
Board member Abdullah Kavukcu builds a play on words on top of it: in Portuguese leão means lion, and the lion is the symbol of Galatasaray. Then he sets out two numbers that coincide, the number 27 shirt and the twenty seventh Turkish league title, which would be the fifth in a row.
The Milan statement: three lines, no figures
The third document arrives at 13:00 Italian time, fifty eight minutes after the Turkish communication. It is short and it leaves no room for doubt: “AC Milan announces that it has permanently transferred the sporting rights of Rafael Alexandre da Conceição Leão to Galatasaray Spor Klübü”. The verb is in the perfect tense, there is no agreement in principle and no suspensive clause. The rest is a thank you: “The Club thanks Rafa for the professionalism and the passion he showed for the Rossoneri shirt in these seven seasons together, in which he contributed to winning the Scudetto in the 2021/22 season and the Supercoppa Italiana 2024”.
What it does not contain is just as instructive: no amount, no percentage, no duration of the Turkish contract, no executive named. All the figures in this deal come from the Galatasaray side. And one detail for a proofreader tells the story of the day’s haste: Milan write “Spor Klübü”, while the correct Turkish spelling is Kulübü.
Seven seasons in 291 appearances
The solid number is the appearances one: 291 in all competitions, agreed on by every source consulted, and divided like this: 227 in Serie A with 64 goals, 44 in European competition with 10 goals, 18 in the Coppa Italia with 6 goals, 2 in the Supercoppa Italiana without scoring.
On total goals the sources do not match, and it is better to say so than to pick the number that sounds best: the tables by competition give 80, and the four lines above add up exactly to that total, while the running text of the same encyclopaedia entry, a few lines higher up, writes 81. The assist count with Milan alone is not public in the sources consulted: Galatasaray credit him with 71 across his whole career, but that is a single source, and its surrounding numbers (345 matches and 103 goals) do not match the encyclopaedia entries, which stop at 333 or 334 matches and 96 or 97 goals.
Leão had arrived from Lille on 1 August 2019. The cost, 49.5 million euros, appears in no club statement: it is recorded by public transfer archives, and one encyclopaedia entry includes in it the roughly 20 million paid to Lille to remove the sell-on clause, describing it as the most expensive fee in Rossoneri history. It is a reconstruction, not a balance sheet figure.
In between there are the 2021-2022 Scudetto, closed out with 42 appearances and 14 goals, of which 34 and 11 in the league, the Serie A player of the season award that year and the Gran Galà del calcio AIC as the outright best in 2022. The number 10 shirt came in 2023-2024, left free by Brahim Díaz. Then the captain’s armband on 23 September 2023 against Verona, the 200th Rossoneri appearance on 30 March 2024 in the 2-1 win in Florence, 50 goals in Serie A on 9 November 2024 with the brace in the 3-3 against Cagliari, and the Supercoppa final of 6 January 2025: on at the fiftieth minute at 0-2 against Inter, an assist for Abraham for the 3-2. And the fastest goal in Serie A history is still his: 6.76 seconds, in Sassuolo 1-2 Milan on matchday thirteen of 2020-2021.
The 2025-2026 season closed with 31 appearances and 10 goals, of which 29 and 9 in Serie A, without European competition because Milan were not involved in Europe. As for the season just begun, in the statistical tables updated to 30 August there is no Milan 2026-2027 line, and among the Rossoneri scorers of the first two matchdays there are Alphadjo Cissè, Adrien Rabiot and Gonçalo Ramos, not him: converging clues, not a match report. According to the Turkish welcome statement, the only source that reports it, the contract renewed in 2023 tied him to Milan until 30 June 2028.
Where he lands, and what he leaves behind
Galatasaray are the reigning Turkish champions with four consecutive titles, 26 league titles in total, 19 Turkish Cups and 17 Super Cups, the last two figures being national records. The manager is Okan Buruk, the stadium the Rams Park, 52,652 seats. In the Süper Lig they have played three matches with two wins and a draw, 9 goals scored and 4 conceded according to the summary updated to 29 August, and in the Champions League they enter the league phase between 8 and 10 September. Leão finds İlkay Gündoğan, Lucas Torreira, Mario Lemina and above all Victor Osimhen, the club’s top scorer this season with 5 goals and a declared friend: on his arrival in Istanbul his was the first name Leão mentioned.
The Milan he leaves behind is Ruben Amorim’s, top of Serie A after two matchdays with 6 points, 4 goals scored and 1 conceded according to the table updated to the matches of 30 August, coming off the 2-0 win over Venezia on 28 August in front of 75,141 spectators. In Europe the Rossoneri play the Europa League, with the league phase from 16 and 17 September. There is an irony in the coincidence: Leão says goodbye to the only Rossoneri manager who is his compatriot and under whom, in effect, he never played.
What to watch now
The first thing is the clause: the 20 per cent on the profit from the next sale ties Milan to the player’s Turkish future, and it hangs on the offer that will come.
The second is the step up in competition. At 27, with 49 caps and 6 goals for his country (the last on 23 June 2026, in the 5-0 win over Uzbekistan in Houston) and a Nations League won in 2025, Leão moves from a side playing the Europa League to one starting in the Champions League. It is the ground on which Özbek said he expects him to deliver.
The third is the most concrete one: the twenty seventh Turkish title Galatasaray are chasing coincides with the number stitched on his back. The club has already built the narrative of the day on it: now it is down to the pitch.

Frequently asked questions
How much did Galatasaray pay for Rafael Leão?
Thirty eight million euros as a fixed fee, plus 20 per cent of the profit the Turkish club will make on the player's next sale. The two items do not come from a press reconstruction: they are in the communication that Galatasaray Sportif A.Ş. sent to the Turkish public disclosure platform on 30 August 2026, reproduced in full on the club's site. The AC Milan statement, on the other hand, contains no amount at all.
What contract has Leão signed and what shirt number does he wear?
Four years starting from the 2026-2027 season, with ten million euros net guaranteed for each season according to the same Turkish communication. Public transfer archives and encyclopaedia entries indicate an expiry on 30 June 2030. The shirt is number 27, confirmed by the club squad list, by public archives and by the official words of board member Abdullah Kavukcu.
Is the transfer from 29 or 30 August 2026?
From the 30th. The document of 29 August only announces that official negotiations have begun with the player and with AC Milan, and it contains no figure and no duration. The agreement with its financial terms was communicated on 30 August at 13:02 local time in Istanbul, and Milan announced the permanent transfer at 13:00 Italian time on the same day.
How many appearances did Leão make for Milan, and how many goals did he score?
Two hundred and ninety one appearances in all competitions, a number agreed on by every source consulted: 227 in Serie A, 44 in European competition, 18 in the Coppa Italia and 2 in the Supercoppa Italiana. On goals the sources do not match: the tables by competition give 80, and they add up exactly to that total, while the running text of the same encyclopaedia entry writes 81.
Which trophies did Leão win at Milan?
Two, and they are the two the Rossoneri statement names: the 2021-2022 Scudetto and the Supercoppa Italiana 2024. In the Supercoppa final, played on 6 January 2025 against Inter, he came on at the fiftieth minute at 0-2 and provided the assist for Abraham for the decisive 3-2.
Why does Galatasaray publish the figures and Milan does not?
Because Galatasaray Sportif A.Ş. is listed on the Istanbul stock exchange and every fact that can move the share price has to be communicated to the public disclosure platform. The obligation produces something you do not see in other leagues: the club has to declare the opening of a negotiation as well, not only its conclusion, and together with the agreement it publishes the financial terms.
