Nottingham Forest have completed the signing of Ousmane Diomande: a fixed fee of 40 million euros to Sporting, on a four-year deal with an option for a fifth. The move, announced by the English club today, ends a negotiation that had dragged on for weeks and hands Oliver Glasner the defender the Austrian coach had already chased at Crystal Palace. It is a fee worth reading for what it says about the price of centre-backs.

The defender Forest are getting
Diomande is a physically built centre-back: one metre ninety, right-footed, with a quality that matters more than the centimetres in his position, recovery speed. He is the type of defender who accepts defending a long way from his own goal because he knows that if he is beaten he has the legs to put it right.
The rest of the profile comes from three and a half years at Sporting: 132 matches and 7 goals according to the numbers circulated by the club, two Portuguese titles in 2023-24 and 2024-25, last season’s Taça de Portugal, two selections in the Primeira Liga team of the year. Along the way, close to twenty Champions League appearances, which at twenty-two is the line the market reads first.

Three and a half years later the same signature is worth 40 million. That is not an accidental profit, it is a model: buy a player in a second-tier league who has already shown he can handle a step up, put him in a team that plays in Europe, and sell him once the European minutes have done their work on the price.
Why Forest are spending like this
The fair question is why a club that stayed up in sixteenth place with 43 points would commit forty million to one defender. The answer has two parts.
The first concerns the dugout. Last season Forest used four permanent managers in a single Premier League campaign, a record nobody goes looking for: Nuno Espírito Santo, Ange Postecoglou, Sean Dyche and finally Vítor Pereira, who arrived in mid-February and pulled the team clear of danger. That Glasner had already gone after him in London says the rest: this is not a name from a list of alternatives, it is the profile the coach had in mind before he even signed for Forest.

The market for centre-backs has narrowed because the job has changed. Today’s defender is asked to defend in open space, to step out of the line without breaking it, and to start the move with the ball at his feet while an opponent runs at him. Anyone who can do all three belongs to a small category, and prices form inside it.
Sporting, for their part, had an 80 million euro release clause in the player’s contract. Selling at half that figure means they negotiated a deal rather than being forced into an auction.
What to expect now
Settling in will not be automatic. The Premier League is the competition where a defender is attacked in open space more than anywhere else, and Diomande arrives from a league, the Portuguese one, where the rhythm of transitions is different.
The signal to look for in the opening weeks is not the number of duels won, which a body like his will deliver anyway. It is the synchronisation with the other two centre-backs: how often he steps out early and his team-mates push up with him, how often he steps out alone. When that gap closes, Forest will have bought well. If it is still there in October, the problem was never the price.
