The statement says loan, option, and a fee that is not a price
The Athletic Club text is brief and should be read for what it contains rather than for what everyone assumes. It contains three things: the length, until the end of the season; the option to buy in West Ham’s favour; and a fixed fee that the Bilbao club banks regardless of what happens in June.
That last point is the least ordinary one. In a straight loan the selling club receives nothing beyond the wage saving and bets everything on the player’s value when he returns. Here Athletic take a certain sum now and keep the bigger door open: if West Ham exercise the option, a second payment follows; if they do not, the player comes back to Bilbao with a contract still running to 30 June 2029, three seasons ahead of him and no urgency to sell.

Adama Boiro Boiro was born on 22 June 2002 in Dakar, Senegal, to parents originally from Guinea. He moved to Spain with his family at the age of four and grew up in Navarre: San Jorge first, then Ardoi, then the Osasuna academy. Between 2021 and 2024 he played 67 matches for Osasuna B in the fourth division, scoring once.
On 24 January 2024 Athletic signed him by paying his 2 million euro release clause and gave him a long contract, five and a half years. They did not send him straight into the first team: the first stop was Bilbao Athletic, the B side, with a debut in a goalless draw away at Barbastro a few days after his arrival. Thirteen games and one goal in that half-season.
His La Liga debut came on 28 August 2024, 79 minutes in a 1-0 home win over Valencia. His first European match, in the Europa League league phase, he opened himself: he scored in the sixth minute from a Gorka Guruzeta assist, then returned the favour by setting up the same team-mate for the last goal, in a 3-0 win over Elfsborg at San Mamés.

A step down that is not a personal demotion
The West Ham United receiving Boiro is not the club of the last fourteen years. They were relegated at the end of the 2025-26 season, on the final day, despite beating Leeds 3-0 at home: two points behind Tottenham and the end of a Premier League stay that had lasted since 2012. Nuno Espirito Santo, who arrived during that campaign, stayed on in the Championship with the declared brief of taking the club back up at the first attempt.
For a 24-year-old full-back the right question is not which league carries more prestige, but how many minutes get played. At Athletic, Boiro has one appearance this season, against Barcelona: it is the number the club itself puts in its statement, and it explains the loan better than any commentary. The Championship is a 46-game league with cups on top. If he plays, he plays a lot.
Then there is the buying club’s side. West Ham lost their first-choice left-back during the summer and had already closed a second defensive loan on 1 September, Brazilian centre-back Morato from Nottingham Forest, also with an option to buy. The club adds league, Copa del Rey and Europe into a single figure; the archive splits them. Read quickly, the two look contradictory, when in fact they measure different things.
The same applies to the Champions League. The agencies that carried the announcement write that Boiro played six matches in the last edition of the competition: that is a press figure, it does not appear in the Athletic statement, and we report it as such. What holds without qualification is that the player comes from a club that plays that competition and joins one that this year plays its Saturdays in the English second tier.
Why the announcement is dated 2 September when the window shut on the 1st
One last detail is worth clearing up, because it produces the same confusion every year. The English window, for the Premier League and the EFL, closed at 23:00 BST on Tuesday 1 September 2026: the Premier League says so on its own site. The Athletic statement is dated 2 September, with the player still travelling to London.
There is no contradiction. A club that has already reached agreement can file, before the gong, the document known as a deal sheet and gain two extra hours to complete paperwork only: the player’s contract, work permits, documents between the two clubs, international clearance. The negotiation has to be finished before 23:00; afterwards, only stamps. The public announcement supporters see can therefore land the next day with nothing done out of time.
What to watch now
Three things, in order of time. The first is minutes: West Ham play a crowded Championship calendar and the point of this loan lives there, not in the name of the club. The second is the option: what it is worth and on what conditions is not public, and it will only become so when somebody either exercises it or lets it lapse, as has happened in other cases this same summer. The third concerns Bilbao: with Boiro gone, the left-back slot at Athletic opens for whoever was behind him, and the next round of La Liga fixtures will say who takes it.
What remains is the fact that makes this deal more interesting than its financial size suggests: a player who four years ago was in the Spanish fourth division, and who last season came on in the biggest competition in Europe, has chosen the English second tier in order to play. It is not a step back in a career. It is the difference between one appearance and forty.
