OGC Nice announced on 31 August 2026, at 21:00, that Mohamed Amoura had joined from Wolfsburg on loan with an option to buy. The French statement covers the essentials: a 26 year old forward, a loan from the German club, an option. What makes this more than an ordinary late-August move sits in Wolfsburg’s farewell note, in one line hardly anybody picked up: in the second division season already under way, Amoura had not played. Not a single minute.

The club letting him go writes that it never picked him in the second tier
The VfL Wolfsburg statement is headed „Amoura nach Nizza“ and opens as you would expect: „VfL-Angreifer Mohammed Amoura wird seine Karriere in der französischen Ligue 1 fortsetzen. Mit dem OGC Nizza verständigte sich der VfL Wolfsburg auf einen Transfer per Leihe“. In English: the VfL forward will continue his career in France’s Ligue 1, and Wolfsburg have reached agreement with Nice on a loan transfer.
Then the sentence that changes how you read the rest: „In der aktuellen Zweitligasaison ist er nicht zum Einsatz gekommen“. In the current second division season, he has not been used.
That single line is worth more than a fee. A forward with 18 goals in 67 games across the Bundesliga, the relegation play-off and the DFB-Pokal, after relegation, had not been sent on once in the division his club now finds itself in. Nobody states the reasons, and we are not inventing them. But the fact, in writing from the club letting him go, explains why a player of that profile moves on loan in late August and not permanently.
The sign-off is a courtesy line: „Der VfL wünscht Mohammed eine erfolgreiche Zeit in Nizza und alles Gute für die bevorstehenden Aufgaben“, Wolfsburg wish Mohammed a successful time in Nice and all the best for the tasks ahead.
Eighteen goals in sixty-seven games, then the club dropped a division
Amoura’s German numbers are where the two statements agree, which makes them solid. Wolfsburg write: „In der Bundesliga, der Relegation sowie dem DFB-Pokal kam der 26 Jahre alte Offensivspieler zu 67 Partien im VfL-Trikot, in denen ihm 18 Treffer gelangen“. Across the Bundesliga, the relegation play-off and the German Cup, 67 appearances and 18 goals. Nice give the same totals and add last season’s share: 8 of those 18.
One word in that German sentence carries the story on its own: „Relegation“, which in German football is not relegation itself but the play-off that decides it. Wolfsburg lost it to SC Paderborn 07, after a goalless first leg at home and a 2-1 defeat in extra time in the return. Bundesliga.com recorded it in English, and we quote it as published: “After 29 uninterrupted years in Germany’s top flight, Wolfsburg have been relegated from the Bundesliga following Monday’s defeat to Paderborn in the play-off second leg”.
From that point the competition is a different one: the league table page on the club’s website places Wolfsburg alongside Hertha, Kaiserslautern, Nürnberg, Hannover and St. Pauli.
The player did not change: the division of the club that owns him did. And with the division change both the way he is used and the way he is valued.
Nice declare the option, Wolfsburg never mention it, nobody writes the number
The French statement is explicit about the structure: « L’OGC Nice est heureux d’annoncer la signature de Mohammed Amoura. L’attaquant de 26 ans est prêté par Wolfsbourg (avec option d’achat) ». In English: Nice are delighted to announce the signing of Mohammed Amoura, the 26 year old forward on loan from Wolfsburg, with an option to buy. There is no English version of the release: the club serves the same French text at the English-language URL of its site, with only the date localised. What is quoted here is that French original, with our translation alongside.
On the same move, Wolfsburg write „einen Transfer per Leihe“ and „mit sofortiger Wirkung“, a loan transfer with immediate effect. Of the option they say nothing. That is not a denial, it is an asymmetry in how the two clubs communicate, but it needs saying: it is all we know about the financial terms.
What the option is worth, neither of them writes. Get French Football News reports, in English, that “Amoura’s buy option to make his switch permanent is reportedly worth €20m”. That word “reportedly” is the most important one in the sentence, and we keep it: no club has declared an amount, and the German press is vaguer still, talking of a sum in the double-digit millions. Until a club puts the number in writing, it stays a press reconstruction and must be labelled as one.
The same goes for the length. Wolfsburg say only “with immediate effect”, with no end date, and Nice do not address it. That it runs for a season is written by the press, not by the clubs.
From Sétif to Lugano to Brussels: four leagues before twenty-seven
The Nice statement devotes a passage to his career, and it says what kind of player arrives. Amoura came through at ES Sétif in Algeria, then moved to FC Lugano, where between 2021 and 2023 he played 66 games and scored 17 goals. In 2023-24 came a single season at Union Saint-Gilloise in Belgium: 22 goals and 7 assists in all competitions, and a Belgian Cup won. Then Germany, as Wolfsburg put it: „Amoura war im Sommer 2024 von Union Saint-Gilloise zu den Wölfen gewechselt“, Amoura had joined the Wolves from Union Saint-Gilloise in the summer of 2024. Nice present him as « International algérien confirmé (47 sélections, 19 buts) », an established Algeria international with 47 caps and 19 goals.
A note on the name: « Mohammed » with two m’s is what both clubs write, Nice in French and Wolfsburg in German, while the press and encyclopaedic sources use « Mohamed », and the full name is Mohamed El Amine Amoura. Two transliterations of the same man.
The club signing him has just rebuilt its attack, and just lost 3-0
The Nice side taking Amoura in is openly a work in progress, and it is the president who says so. Maurice Cohen, in the statement: « […] Il a eu de nombreuses offres et le fait qu’il s’engage chez nous signifie que nous restons attractifs. Nous sommes convaincus qu’il va se régaler au Gym. Avec son arrivée, combinée à celles de Gautier et de Nathan, ainsi qu’au retour d’Elye, nous sommes parvenus à remodeler notre secteur offensif. […] » In English: he had many offers, and the fact that he is committing to us means we remain attractive; we are convinced he will enjoy himself at the Gym; with his arrival, together with those of Gautier and Nathan and the return of Elye, we have managed to reshape our attacking department.
The three names are Gauthier Hein, an attacking midfielder the club announced on 4 August on a contract to June 2029, Nathan Ngoumou and the returning Elye Wahi. Over the same weeks the club registered three departures in attack: Mohamed-Ali Cho to Hull City permanently, announced on 27 August after 66 appearances with 9 goals and 8 assists, Terem Moffi to Hamburg and Kevin Carlos to Cagliari on loan. A front line remade in one summer.
Sporting director Roger Ricort spells out what he sees: « Mohammed est capable d’évoluer à tous les postes de l’attaque. Il possède une grosse capacité d’accélération et de vraies qualités devant le but. Autres choses importantes : il a le sens du sacrifice et il aime le collectif. Il ne lâche jamais rien, il court énormément. C’est un vrai renfort, un joueur d’expérience. The context is not calm, and the club’s official fixture list sets out both opening rounds: a goalless home draw with Lorient on 22 August, then the 3-0 defeat at Paris FC on 30 August, reported on the club’s own site with Axel Witsel’s words on his debut. One point from two games. The third round is set for Saturday 5 September at 20:45 at the Allianz Riviera against Le Mans FC. The head coach is Olivier Pantaloni, appointed on 17 June 2026 for two seasons.
Amoura’s own words, and a list of suitors two sources tell differently
The player’s quotes, in the language the club published them in: « Je connais bien la L1 et je connais bien l’OGC Nice. J’ai plein d’amis qui ont joué ici. Je sais que la saison dernière n’a pas été facile, mais je sais aussi qu’il y a toujours de grandes ambitions. J’ai aimé le discours des dirigeants et du coach. Je sais que les supporters sont chauds, j’aime ça aussi. J’espère qu’on va faire une bonne saison ! » In English: I know Ligue 1 well and I know OGC Nice well, I have plenty of friends who have played here; I know last season was not easy, but I also know the ambitions here are still big. I liked what the board and the coach had to say. I know the supporters are hot-blooded, and I like that too. I hope we are going to have a good season.
On the « nombreuses offres » the president mentions, though, it is worth slowing down: two versions are circulating and they do not match. Get French Football News writes that Nice beat Lyon, Rennes and Udinese to the player. Foot Mercato, in an exclusive dated 29 August, gives a different list: « Suivi de près par plusieurs prétendants, dont l’Olympique Lyonnais et la formation qatarie d’Al-Sadd », closely tracked by several suitors including Lyon and the Qatari side Al-Sadd. The only name common to both is Lyon. Rennes, Udinese and Al-Sadd appear in one source each, and no club has confirmed anything: not material for the story of an auction.
Not a deadline day deal: the German window shuts on 1 September
The Nice announcement came at 21:00 on 31 August, and the temptation to call it a deadline day deal is as strong as it is wrong.
The German summer window closes on Tuesday 1 September 2026. ESPN writes that the Bundesliga “will open the transfer window on Wednesday, July 1, 2026 and close it at 7 p.m. BST / 2 p.m. ET on Tuesday, Sept. 1, 2026”, and bundesliga.com gives 20:00 on 1 September as the cut-off for German clubs. The two readings agree on 18:00 UTC. The announcement therefore lands roughly twenty-three hours before the deadline, not on the day of it.
It is the same calendar as another deal this week, Ollie Watkins to Al-Hilal: there too the English window closes on 1 September, at 23:00 BST. None of Europe’s major leagues shuts on 31 August, and once that inaccuracy is in circulation it gets copied for days.
What is not confirmed, and we are writing it down here
There is more here undeclared than declared. We list it, so none of it slips through as fact inside a passing sentence.
The value of the option. The 20 million euros is a press reconstruction attributed to the outlet that published it, not a figure communicated by the clubs.
The length of the loan. Neither statement gives it; Wolfsburg say only “with immediate effect”.
Any link between Amoura’s 9 and Terem Moffi’s departure. Both numbers come from the club: the 2026-27 squad page gives Amoura the 9, the 2024-25 page gave it to Moffi. What no statement says is that the two are connected, and writing it would be our inference.
The breakdown of who pays his wages, in the German regional press and in no statement.
Any link between Mohamed-Ali Cho’s departure and Amoura’s arrival. Cho’s sale is official and dated 27 August, but no statement connects the two moves, and when the Nice president explains the rebuilt attack he names Hein, Ngoumou and Wahi, not Cho.
Whether Amoura features on his home debut against Le Mans FC. The fixture is in the club’s official calendar, but that he will be on the pitch is press reporting, put in conditional terms even by the outlet that ran it first.
What to watch now
Three things, in order of checkability. The first is minutes, and here it counts double: a forward who was not playing for his own club in the second division arrives in a top-tier league. The loan only makes sense if that number changes quickly.
The second is the option. Its value is not public and will become so only when somebody exercises it or lets it lapse. Until then every figure is a reconstruction, including the one quoted here.
The third concerns Wolfsburg, the least discussed. A newly relegated club loaning out a forward with 18 goals in two seasons, 8 of them in the last one, is saying something about its balance sheet, its sporting plan, or both. The statement does not explain it: the next few months will.
What remains is the starting fact, the most solid because the club letting him go put it in writing: a forward with 18 goals in 67 games across the Bundesliga, the relegation play-off and the DFB-Pokal had not yet played a minute in the second tier. He is not the one who changed division.
