On 28 August 2026 Real Sociedad and Chelsea announced, with two official statements, the loan of Mamadou Sarr until the end of the 2026-27 season. The defender was born in Martigues on 29 August 2005: on the day of the announcement he was still twenty, and he turned twenty-one the day after. He stands 1.94 metres and weighs 91 kilos, he is right-footed, and in 66 senior games he has never scored. The Basque club present him as a right-sided centre-back used to playing on both sides of the defence.

Sixty-six games, no goals
The number any assessment of Sarr starts from is that one: 66 senior appearances, zero goals, one assist. They break down like this: 3 with Lyon between 2023 and 2024, with his debut on 27 May 2023 against Reims, coming on in the 83rd minute; 10 in Belgium at RWD Molenbeek on loan in 2023-24; 28 at Strasbourg in 2024-25; another 18 again at Strasbourg in the first half of 2025-26; 7 with Chelsea. The only goal he has scored outside the youth ranks came with Lyon B, the reserve side, in 22 games across Championnat National 2 and National 3: in the youth ranks he had scored twice in the Coupe Gambardella with Lyon’s Under 19s in 2022 and once with France Under 18.
The season that got him bought is Strasbourg’s 2024-25, and Chelsea sum it up in their own statement: 28 appearances in all competitions, 27 of them as a starter in Ligue 1, seventh place at the end and a place in the Conference League play-off. At nineteen, in a top-flight league, almost all of them from the first minute. It is the most solid sample he has left behind him, and for now it remains the only one.
A career inside a single ownership
On 9 June 2025 Chelsea announced his signing from Strasbourg. Both clubs belong to BlueCo, the consortium led by Todd Boehly, Clearlake Capital, Mark Walter and Hansjörg Wyss, which took over Chelsea in 2022 and Strasbourg in 2023: the money moved from one pocket of the same ownership to another. How much money, no statement says. Press reconstructions range from ESPN’s bracket of between 13 and 15 million euros and the 14 million indicated twice by the Athletic, the equivalent of the 12 million pounds reported by the BBC, up to the 20 million of the specialist databases. An established price does not exist.
On 1 August 2025, after the Club World Cup, Chelsea sent him back to Strasbourg on a loan announced as lasting the whole of the 2025-26 season, then he was recalled to London on 2 February 2026. Eleven days later came his first start in blue, the fourth round of the FA Cup won 4-0 at Hull. His seven outings with Chelsea also include an appearance at the Club World Cup won in 2025. The move to San Sebastián is the first step that takes him outside that structure.
Until 2033, but amortised over five years
The most quoted number in his contract is 2033, and it comes from the club: Chelsea announced the signing of a contract until that year. Eight seasons. The usual reading of these very long contracts is an accounting one: the registration is an intangible asset and the cost is spread over the term, so more years means less annual weight on the books. It was on that logic that Chelsea had built the eight and a half year deals of January 2023.
For Sarr that reading no longer holds. On 12 December 2023 the Premier League clubs voted in the five year cap on amortisation, and the league’s official statement says that from that moment on a maximum of five years applies to all new or renewed contracts. The rule is not retroactive, and Sarr signed eighteen months after the vote. His contract runs for eight years in legal terms and five in accounting terms: on the 14 million reported by the Athletic that would mean around 2.8 million a year, not 1.75.
Which does not take the sense out of the operation, it shifts it. A deal until 2033 ties the player down for eight years, allows a lower annual wage for the same overall compensation and lengthens the window to recoup the investment: from 2030 the cost will be written down to zero on the books, while the player will still be under contract for another three years, and almost everything the club takes in after that will be a capital gain. It is inside that frame that a straight loan makes sense. Marca adds that it carries no option to buy, press information on which both statements are silent: if confirmed, Chelsea have not given up an option on the player’s future, they have bought twelve months of information about him.
The African final won on the pitch and lost off it
Real Sociedad’s statement describes him as an African champion, while Chelsea limit themselves to writing that Senegal defeated Morocco 1-0 in the final, and it is the point on which it is worth being precise. On 18 January 2026 Sarr started and played all 120 minutes of the final against Morocco, in place of Kalidou Koulibaly, and Senegal won 1-0 on the pitch. On 17 March 2026 the CAF Appeal Board awarded the match 3-0 to Morocco off the pitch, and with it the title. Senegal have appealed to the CAS and no decision is on record. What remains, whatever happens with the dispute, are the three appearances in that tournament and the eight caps for the senior national team, after the change of federation from France to Senegal approved by FIFA on 19 December 2025.
What to watch in San Sebastián
He arrives at Real Sociedad as an emergency choice. Marca tells of a summer of failed attempts at the heart of the defence, among them Nayef Aguerd and the Brazilian Jonathan Jesus, and of a club that does not feel able to rely on the centre-backs of Sanse. Sarr is the first signing of the season, he has taken the 19 and he has found Pellegrino Matarazzo’s side still on zero points after two matches, with 5 goals conceded: the first win came the day after, 2-1 against Espanyol, and took Real Sociedad to 3 points in three match days, with 6 goals conceded. The first chance to see him on the pitch is on 3 September at Anoeta against Celta.
There are three things to measure: how many minutes Matarazzo gives him in a defence that so far has conceded twice as much as it has scored, whether the first league season away from France and from the BlueCo structure stands comparison with the full campaign at Strasbourg, and whether a centre-back of 1.94 metres starts to make an impact in the opposition box as well.
