On 31 August 2026, at 20:46 Italian time (18:46 UTC), Lille announced Ayase Ueda: a four year contract until 2030, the first Japanese player in the club’s history, arriving from Feyenoord Rotterdam. The LOSC statement contains everything you need to understand the deal except one thing, what it cost. Neither club has written that number down, and it is the one point on which the outlets covering the negotiation could not even agree with each other.

The hardest fact in this transfer is a statistic, not a price
Normally it works the other way round: the fee is the solid number and the statistics are the garnish you have to check. Here the order is reversed, and that is what makes the Ueda case instructive.
The twenty five goals in thirty one Eredivisie games do not come from a report. The buying club put them in writing, in its announcement of 31 August, in French: “Sa saison 2025-2026 est celle de l’explosion. Ayase inscrit 25 buts en 31 matchs d’Eredivisie (!) Meilleur buteur du championnat, le Japonais s’impose naturellement comme un attaquant titulaire de la sélection pour la Coupe du Monde 2026”, which reads in English as “his 2025-2026 season is the one where he explodes. Ayase scores 25 goals in 31 Eredivisie games (!) Top scorer in the league, the Japanese naturally establishes himself as a starting forward for the national team at the 2026 World Cup”. The encyclopaedic scoring table for the Dutch top flight, built on league statistics, says the same, and NOS calls him, with no hedging, “eredivisietopscorer van afgelopen seizoen”, last season’s Eredivisie top scorer.
The margin says how unusual the season was. The runner up, Ajax winger Mika Godts, finished on seventeen. Eight fewer. For Feyenoord it is rare: Ueda is the club’s first Eredivisie top scorer since Steven Berghuis, who shared the 2019-20 title with Cyriel Dessers, and only the seventh in its history to finish a season top of that list. The sources diverge here and it is worth saying so: NOS names Nicolai Jørgensen in 2017 as the precedent, while Voetbal International reconstructs the run and puts Berghuis in between, in a season later abandoned in April 2020. Jørgensen remains the last Feyenoord player to top the chart outright.
The price, by contrast, is written down nowhere. Read in full, Lille’s announcement contains no transfer figure. Feyenoord’s official post on X, at 20:45 Italian time (18:45 UTC), a minute before Lille’s announcement, was published in English and says this, and nothing at all about money: “Feyenoord and LOSC Lille have reached an agreement over the transfer of Ayase Ueda. All the best, Ayase”. No number, on either club channel, sixty seconds apart.
Fifteen million is a reconstruction, and the reconstructions did not agree
The figure in circulation is around fifteen million euros, and it deserves to be reported the way the sources report it, which is carefully.
NOS, the Dutch public broadcaster, uses a formula that is worth more than a footnote: “het Franse Lille, dat naar verluidt 15 miljoen euro betaalt”, the French club Lille, “which reportedly pays 15 million euros”. VoetbalPrimeur writes “voor zo’n vijftien miljoen euro”, for around fifteen million euros. Anyone who repeats that number after deleting the “naar verluidt” has changed what kind of statement it is.
The reconstructions were not even consistent. De Telegraaf reported at least twenty million euros, while Voetbal International and L’Équipe stayed at fifteen, which L’Équipe writes with add-ons included. Writing “fifteen million” as a fact means picking one version without telling the reader you picked, and stripping the lower figure of the variable part its own source declares. We are saying the choice exists.
One observation can still be made, and it is not ours: the Dutch outlet that picks up the French figure already writes that it is “lager dan de marktwaarde”, below his market value. Public archive valuations, updated to 22 July 2026, had Ueda at 20.00 million euros. If the press figure is right, the deal sits below that valuation rather than above it, the opposite of the story usually told when a Ligue 1 club buys a league top scorer. It stays an estimate held against a reconstruction, not a price anybody has confirmed paying.
There is also a trap doing the rounds in search results: a French headline claiming Ueda has committed to LOSC until 2028. It contradicts the official announcement, which says 2030, and the public profiles, which record 30 June 2030. The 2028 date was the expiry of his old Feyenoord contract.
The technical profile comes from the buying club, and it is about movement rather than bulk
On how he plays, the best source is the club that just paid for him, quoted as written: “Ayase Ueda est un attaquant très mobile, capable de multiplier les appels et doté en outre d’un bon sens du placement. Il affiche une bonne efficacité et beaucoup de sang-froid devant le but”, in English “Ayase Ueda is a very mobile forward, able to multiply his runs and also blessed with a good sense of position. He shows good efficiency and a lot of composure in front of goal”.
It describes a centre forward who lives on timing and running rather than bulk. Public archives list him as right footed, a natural centre forward with second striker as the alternative. No club declares any of that, so it stays an archive detail.
The most useful outside verdict comes from someone who watched him closely in Belgium. Jimmy De Wulf, assistant coach at Cercle Brugge, described him as a complete forward in an interview given in Dutch to Het Nieuwsblad on 18 April 2023. The English phrase “complete striker” is not his: it is the wording encyclopaedic archives use when they report that interview, and it is those same archives that add strong finishing allied to pace, agility, leap and strength above average for his size, along with the aerial work that became his signature at Feyenoord. For a forward of 1.82 metres that is not a given.
President Olivier Létang added a sentence worth pausing on: “nous recherchions un attaquant complet et capable d’apporter de la présence dans la surface adverse, ainsi que de l’expérience et des qualités complémentaires aux profils déjà présents dans notre effectif”, in English “we were looking for a complete forward, able to bring presence in the opposition box, as well as experience and qualities that complement the profiles already in our squad”. The word that matters is “complémentaires”, complementary. Lille is not claiming to have bought a starter to replace somebody, but a different kind of player from the ones it had.
Ueda explained his choice like this, in the French wording published by the club: “Je suis très heureux de rejoindre le LOSC, un club qui compte en Ligue 1 et en Champions League. J’ai vraiment été séduit par le club, notamment par le style de football pratiqué et qui me plait beaucoup, mais aussi par son stade magnifique et ses supporters”, in English “I am very happy to join LOSC, a club that matters in Ligue 1 and in the Champions League. I was genuinely won over by the club, in particular by the style of football it plays and which I like a great deal, but also by its magnificent stadium and its supporters”.
A career built in steps, not leaps
The path Lille lists is that of a forward assembled by accumulation: the Kashima Antlers academy and Hōsei University, then the Kashima first team from 2019, 47 goals in 103 games across three and a half seasons. Then Cercle Brugge, 23 goals in 42 games across all competitions and 22 in 40 in the league, second in the Jupiler Pro League scoring charts. Then Feyenoord, from the summer of 2023, with the Dutch cup won in 2024 and the Champions League last sixteen reached in 2024-25.
There is one detail Lille’s announcement does not hide: that European run went through a 6-1 defeat at the hands of LOSC on 29 January 2025. The club introducing him to its supporters reminds them it put six past his team a year and seven months earlier.
The Rotterdam story is well known. In his first season Ueda mostly played behind Santiago Gimenez, as VoetbalPrimeur puts it: “in zijn eerste seizoen moest Ueda het vooral met een rol achter Santiago Gimenez doen”, in his first season Ueda had to make do mainly with a role behind Santiago Gimenez. Once the Mexican was sold to Milan he became the undisputed number nine. The total, according to NOS and VoetbalPrimeur, is 112 appearances, 43 goals and 7 assists in all competitions.
The peak has a precise date: 6 December 2025, four goals in a 6-1 win over PEC Zwolle, which took him to 18 goals in 15 games that season across all competitions, on the way to 25 in the league. And 2026-27 had already started well, with 3 goals in 4 games before he left.
In between sits the 2026 World Cup, mentioned in the French announcement: a brace against Tunisia in a 0-4 win for Japan, the score written the way the club statement writes it, and elimination in the round of 32 against Carlo Ancelotti’s Brazil, 2-1. Here the LOSC statement gets a name wrong and we are not copying it across: it writes “le Brésil de Davide Ancelotti”, which is the name of its own head coach, while the Brazil bench belonged to Carlo. Ueda arrived there as a Japan starter, and the club presents that as a consequence of his season as a league top scorer.
A problem in the box on one side, an attack emptied in an afternoon on the other
The move makes sense from both ends, but the two ends do not look alike.
Lille finished third in Ligue 1 in 2025-26 and had Olivier Giroud up front, the man Ueda will compete with. The number that makes LOSC’s window readable is a different one: the sale of Ayyoub Bouaddi to Manchester City, which NOS and the French press put at around 100 million euros including add-ons, while LOSC’s own statement of 26 August contains no figure at all. According to NOS, that is the money that funded the club’s buying.
The contrast sits inside Lille’s own accounts, and says more than any argument about what a striker is worth. The same club that five days earlier had sold an eighteen year old with no senior goals for the roughly hundred million including add-ons reported by the press has now fixed its problem in the box with a twenty five goal striker of twenty eight, for a fraction of that sum. The market pays for the time a player has left, not for the goals he has already scored, and this pair of deals shows it in the same week and in the same set of books.
At the other end is a club that emptied its attack in hours. On the same day Feyenoord also sold Casper Tengstedt to Toulouse, leaving themselves with two young centre forwards, Shaqueel van Persie and Nacho Ferri, and with the window due to close on the Wednesday at 23:59. Ueda’s contract ran until the middle of 2028: the club sold with two years still to run, not on the edge of a free transfer.
He finished his last Feyenoord game in character, scoring, before coming off ten minutes from time in a draw with ADO Den Haag. His farewell words were published on the club’s website, but we have read them only through VoetbalPrimeur, which explicitly attributes them to that source: “het doet me veel om Feyenoord te verlaten na alle mooie momenten die ik hier met iedereen heb beleefd”, in English “it means a lot to me to leave Feyenoord, after all the beautiful moments I have lived here with everyone”.
What is not confirmed, written down before anyone has to ask
Three points in this deal do not stand up as facts. We list them, because the difference between a declared number and a reconstructed one is the job.
The first is the fee. Neither club has communicated it. Fifteen million is a reconstruction, reported with a hedge by the Dutch sources, and in competition with a higher one.
The second is Feyenoord’s own statement. We could not open it: the address answers every attempt with a block, and no copy exists in the web archives. Everything attributed to it, the player’s farewell words included, reaches us second hand through the Dutch press.
The third concerns his Feyenoord totals. The 112 appearances and 43 goals come from NOS and VoetbalPrimeur, not from a club statement, and they cover all competitions. Encyclopaedic tables give 82 appearances and 40 goals counting league football only: they do not contradict each other, they measure different sets. The same applies to the eight million euros Feyenoord are said to have paid Cercle Brugge in 2023, itself a press reconstruction.
What to watch now
Three things, in order of time. First, the pecking order up front, and the first team sheet has already half answered. Update as of 4 September 2026: on 3 September at Toulouse Ueda made his debut, coming on at 57 minutes for Giroud, and headed in the only goal of a 0-1 win at 73. For now they alternate rather than play together, and the first French goal came with his head, exactly where the archives said his strength was. Second, how the goals travel outside the Eredivisie: twenty five in a league that leaves space do not automatically become twenty five in Ligue 1, and the better measure will be his shots against the chances the team builds, not the goal count in the opening weeks. Third, Feyenoord, who have opened a hole in attack with the window all but shut.
What is left is the picture that makes this transfer instructive. A player wins a scoring chart by eight goals and changes country without anyone declaring what he cost, while in the same accounts an eighteen year old who had not scored at all is sold with a number the press wrote down and neither club has confirmed. That is how the market says what it is really buying, without ever writing it down.
