From Marseille to Udine
Camara was born in Conakry and arrived in France as a child. His football starts in Marseille, at SC Air Bel, where he stays five years: from 2018 to 2023. It is a grassroots club, not a professional academy, and that says something about the path.
In July 2023 he joined the Montpellier youth set-up. In 2024-25 he stepped up to the reserve side, which plays in Championnat National 3, and began training with the first team: he even made the bench for a Ligue 1 fixture against Nice, without coming on.
In July 2025 Udinese took him to Italy on a contract until June 2029. He spent the season captaining the club’s under-19 Primavera side while training regularly with the seniors, and on 17 May 2026 he made his Serie A debut, coming on late in a 1-0 home defeat to Cremonese.
How he plays
The role is that of the classic number six: the midfielder who sits in front of the defensive line and holds the two phases together.
Defensively his repertoire is built on physical presence and tackling range: at 1.88 metres he covers a lot of lateral ground, and he is described as good at anticipation, meaning reading where the ball will end up before the opponent gets there. It is a quality worth more than raw pace, because it lets him intervene without having to chase.
In possession two traits stand out. Press resistance, the ability to receive with his back to goal and an opponent on him without losing the ball, and the vertical pass that breaks the line, the one that skips a unit and puts a teammate in a position to attack.
Those are the two skills that today separate a midfielder from a high-level midfielder. The first cleans the ball and passes it to the nearest man; the second receives in the same situation and finds the play that moves the team twenty metres up the pitch.
The international record
| Selection | Period | Role |
|---|---|---|
| France under-16 | 2023 | 10 caps |
| France under-17 | 2024-2025 | captain, runner-up at the 2025 European Championship |
| France under-17 | 2025 | U-17 World Cup |
| France under-19 | 2026 | captain |
Able to choose between Guinea and France, he opted for the latter. The captaincy carried in three different age groups is the most significant line on his record: youth national team coaches change squads every two years and have no obligation to keep the same captain.
Why Jong Ajax and not the first team
The Ajax statement is explicit: once the move is completed, Camara joins the under-23 squad, which plays in the Eerste Divisie and trains at Sportpark De Toekomst.
That choice follows a precise logic. In the Netherlands the second team plays a genuine professional league, with thirty-eight rounds against adult opponents: a seventeen-year-old finds there the minutes he would never have got in Serie A, and finds them in matches that count in a table.
The alternative, staying in Udine as the fourth midfielder, would have given him higher-level training and perhaps ten cameos across the whole season. For a player born in 2008 who has to learn how to manage ninety minutes, that is not the same thing.
What the option says
The press reports a buy option of around 15 million euros and describes it as close to an obligation. Neither club has confirmed the figure, and it should be treated as a report.
If the number is right, though, it describes Udinese’s position well: they bought a player from a French youth set-up in 2025, had him captain their under-19 side for a season, and a year later hold a registration valued at roughly ten times as much. It is the model the Friuli club has worked with for years, applied to a seventeen-year-old instead of a twenty-year-old.
What is left to find out
The question concerns the step up that has not happened yet. Camara has played one professional match, and in that match he came on in the closing minutes of a defeat.
Everything we know about him comes from youth leagues and under-age national teams, contexts in which talent stands out more easily because opponents make more mistakes. A season as a starter in the Eerste Divisie, against professionals playing for next year’s contract, will say whether the valuation holds.
